Run for the Fallen 2008: Final Day Event

Final Flag

Run for the Fallen finished its apolitical memorial run at Arlington National Cemetery on Sunday, August 24, 2008. From a quick glance, there were more than 250 runs organized across the globe, all running with one purpose in mind: to Run for the Fallen. While we are still tallying the total miles of remembrance runs, we have determined the mileage for roughly 85% of the runs (well, those who emailed us anyway). Spanning ten different countries (France, Brazil, England, Iraq, Afghanistan, Kuwait, S. Korea, Indonesia, China and Tanzania) and over 43 U.S. states, there were 9,145 participants who collectively ran 35,725 miles for the fallen. There were also six miles climbed vertically for the fallen.

Great idea! I ran a search on http://www.icasualties.org and found that - from the greater Omaha (NE) metro area - there have been 13 service people who have lost their lives in service to our country. Based on that, I’ve approached our local running club with proposal to sponsor either a 13K (8 mile) or 13 mile (half-marathon) on August 24 in conjunction with the Run for the Fallen’s finish.

THANK YOU Girls Scouts of Coronado, CA!

Last night, I found that we are 50 name cards short for the flag markers. Who could answer the call to as a service project? The Girls Scouts. As I walked out of church this morning, the local Girl Scouts were setting up in the park, when asked if they could help, the girls from Troops: 5043 (junior), 801 (cadette), 5067 (junior) and 5164 (brownie) came through.

They were fantastic, and truly represented the true spirit os the scouts…to serve.

  9. May Vukotich 06.12.08 / 8am

Last night, my husband and six-year old daughter Natalia, and I worked on our little stack of 25 name cards. We talked about the soldiers who sacrificed their lives and we cried. After we finished our cards Natalia said, “Tell Ms. Shannon (Cleary) that we can do 100 more cards and I’ll do 50 of them myself.” We’re so excited to be part of your amazing event. THANK YOU for all your hard work.

August 24 will include three more runners, The Vukotich Family with a pledge of 6 miles (3 miles from Stefan - 2 miles from May and 1 mile from 6 year old Natalia).

  10. Michelle 06.13.08 / 5pm

Thank you SO much for doing this! As the wife of a deployed soldier and the friend of some of the fallen you are running for, you really have no idea how much this means to us. God bless you!

  11. Erika 06.14.08 / 6am

I graduated from Hamilton in 2006 and remember the news of Michael Cleary’s death. My husband is currently serving a 15 month tour in Iraq and my thoughts are of our soldiers every day.

Since my husband left in November 2007, we have lost several friends. As a military spouse, officer’s wife, and Hamilton College alum, I truly appreciate your commitment to honoring our troops.

Today, Flag Day, and the start of your trek across the country, is the day my husband is due home for his mid-tour leave. I am excited with anticipation to see my husband and wish you luck in your journey.

Thank you for remembering. BRAVE RIFLES…..Sabre Ready! 2-3 ACR Fort Hood, TX

  16. SSgt Noah Stamps 06.15.08 / 7am

I have just heard about runforthefallen.org on CNN and wanted to relay how elated I am that you are doing something of this nature to memorialize the fallen from OIF. However, I am concerned that the website only advertises fallen Soldiers. I am an Airman in the United States Air Force and also a veteran of OIF. It is a common mistake to label all military members as Soldiers, but this term is geared towards the Army specifically. We are Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen, and Marines. We all play our own parts within the military. Although the term Soldier is honorable and seems all-inclusive to most civilians, it is incorrect. Please recognize and respect the sacrifice of each branch’s servicemen and women. Again, thank you for what you’re doing and I wish you good luck. Be safe, SSgt Noah Stamps USAF

We would be honored to join you on August 24th to run for several members of our military from the Lehigh Valley Area in PA and from across the country who so bravely made the ultimate sacrifice. We are a collective group of approximately 200 people who join in celebration of our freedom and appreciation of those who provide it for us every July 4th at our own fundraising event . We began hosting this event since the beginning of the war on terror in Afghanistan and it has grown every year as we bring awareness to our friends and family of what is actually sacrificed in the name of freedom. As I watched CNN tonight, I was moved by your cause and think it is a great way to bring local and national awareness to the people of this country who sometimes forget what is given for them. At our July 4th event, we pledge to spread the news of your cause and organize a local run through the Lehigh Valley area. My brother is a Marine currenlty serving in Iraq. We ask for prayers for his safe return and for all of those who remain in the fight. We offer our deepest gratitude for all those who have given their lives for this great country and for their fellow Americans. We pray for peace for the families and friends of our fallen heroes that struggle with their loss every day.

Happy to join you on August 24th!

God Bless you all and God Bless America!

    Bethlehem, PA

My nephew, Cpl Martza, Maurice-USMC/Iraq, and my cousin Tsgt Charlie, Michelle-USAF/Iraq. As I run and huff & puff-I’ll be thinking of those who gave the ultimate price for love of country and those who are even now in harm’s way. I know I’ll cry some, but I’ll remember the air I’m breathing, the pain I’ll experience while running in this beautiful countryside, I’ll be grateful and humble because it is a gift given to me as an American to enjoy for the rest of my days. I love and support all our military and their families.

It makes me proud to have served and to see the outpouring of backing I am recieving to promote this for miles for you guys and lady and for the service members we have lost. You are to be admired for your accomplishments.

This poem is perfect, for the runners to start each day with………..

“I give you this one thought to keep~
I am with you still, I do not sleep.

I am a thousand winds that blow,
I am the diamond glints on snow,
I am the sunlight on ripened grain,
I am the gentle autumn rain.

When you awaken in the morning’s hush,
I am the swift, uplifting rush
of quiet birds in circled flight.
I am the soft stars that shine at night.

Do not think of me as gone~
I am with you still, in each new dawn.”

    Native American poem

Hi. Well, I’ve only been away from the Run for 4 full days, and I miss all of you. The ‘healing’ that so many have spoken of, may actually have begun for me after two and a half years of being somewhat lost to grief. We have met so many amazing people through this journey…from Mary in Perris Lake to Pastor Dan in Indio, the folks at the Best Western’s in Twenty-nine Palms and Parker, AZ…Landaker’s, Martinez’s, Buck’s…countless. See you in a week in Kansas. Thank you. We hold each other up…

Okay ya’ll from Mississippi, or surrounding areas who want to participate….unfortunately I received word from Run for the Fallen that we were not following some of the guidelines, but our heart is in the right place. They encouraged us to continue our run, just to donate to one of their listed charities…the way I see it is that the money was going to go to one anyway. So, we are still doing our 5K the way we planned and now calling it 5K for Mississippi’s Fallen Soldiers! It is going to be a great event, and I could not be more excited how it is falling into place so smoothly. For anyone interested and interested in a 5K registration form,. please contact me pamperedarmywife@yahoo.com for all of the details. Thanks!! Hope for this to be a huge success…we have people coming from all over the state for our fallen. Thanks and hope to see you there and meet each and every one of you. Our fallen are not forgotten!!

On Friday, July 18th I’ll be running in memory of Lance Cpl Matthew Snyder of Finksburg, Maryland. I’ll be running in Staten Island, NY

I met his mom through a mutual friend via email. Julie and I had been emailing for almost a year until we met for the first time in Topeka, Kansas on Flag Day - Saturday, June 14th of this year. Julie and I were in Topeka, Kansas for The Reading - a Reading of the names of the fallen from Iraq and Afghanistan. Julie Read the name of her son Matthew Snyder - killed in Iraq On March 3, 2006.

In an email to Julie shortly after I came home I mentioned that my birthday was July 18th. Julie responded back with an urgent “please read this ASAP’ message. In Julie’s message back to me she informed me her son and I share the same birthday. In all the emails over the year we never spoke of birthdays.

A hello to you from North West England. I’ve been in touch with my family in different parts of the US and put together a “Family Challange” with my siblings and children. We will be running or walking various distances in Wyoming, New Jersey, Delaware and Illinois as well as over here in Lancashire, England. There is a strong tie to the Armed Forces in my family and each one of us is directly related to someone who has served in combat. Our family tribute is our way to say thank you to those who have served and gone before us. This is a noble and good thing you are all doing. Bless.

How can I find out what time the run for Sgt. Jason Vaughn will be run in Dykes Mill, Tenn., on August 24, 2008? He is my son, and I want to be there. However, it’s too far to drive and then miss the event, so I need to know a little more information. Could someone please e-mail me and let me know? ranaesv@hotmail.com
    Thanks!

Update…My run/walk has now become a 3 mile walk. I got a hold of the mayor and have a meeting with the city commissioners and we are getting the law enforcement together, restaurnats donating cases of water and ice.Flyers are all over town and i have a newspaper article coming out on the 12th of August. Freedom Riders are rding their motorcycles from our community and each over 299 bikers are riding 3 miles each. i am expecting of the regular people of the community atleast 100 of them. This has gotten to be a big even for our town. i will not know how many miles we have all pledged together but i will make sure i do post it after the run on August 24th. My run/walk starts at 9:00am that morning and registration and runners to sign waivers will be at 7:00am that morning. Keep up the goodwork guys!!! Im glad to see were all doing this for an awesome cause. Also i am getting a big banner and having everyone sign it after the event and sending it to a unit over in Iraq and letting them know they DO have support at home.

    God Bless America!

Our family, My husband LTC. DeFries (USMC), my daughter, age 14 and I, would like to run in the Charlottesville area on the 16th of August. I plan to run from the Ivy area through the city+ (10-15 miles) and my husband, who is a 2 tour Iraq veteran, CH-46 pilot and my daughter, are good for about 4-5 miles. I have spoken to Carol Barnett and have called the contact in D.C. that she gave me, but I have not heard back. We are running in honor of Capt. Jay “Sweetpea” Aubin, USMC. He was killed in March of 2003 in a CH-46 crash, soon after arriving in country. He was a great guy!
(I am looking for any info about the exact route that day).

There is an organization that created a new national symbol that is making its way through congress. A flag to honor all those who gave the ultimate sacrifice at any time since our country began. Not only killed in action but killed in military service. The Honor and Remember Flag and emblem would be a respectful compliment to any tribute to our fallen troops. Please check it out. http://www.HonorandRemember.org
